Peter A. Balnave, Ph.D.

Peter A. Balnave is an associate attorney in the firm and is a registered patent attorney. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Chemistry from Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, in 1969; a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) in Physiology and Biophysics from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, in 1976; and a Juris Doctor degree from George Mason University, Arlington, Virginia, in 1999.

Dr. Balnave is a member of the Virginia State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Balnave currently concentrates on patent application preparation and prosecution in the electrical, chemical, and biotechnology arts.

Prior to entering the legal field, Dr. Balnave had more than 20 years of experience in research and development within the medical device industry. Dr. Balnave's initial industrial experience was as a research engineer in the development of a microprocessor-based cardiac arrhythmia analyzer, where he developed software algorithms for the detection and identification of specific cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Balnave held various management and executive positions in research and development within both entrepreneurial start-up companies and a Fortune 500 corporation. He successfully directed engineering groups in the design of large-scale application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), microprocessor-based medical products, telemetry systems, and in the selection of materials for implantable medical devices.

Dr. Balnave is a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the American Chemical Society (ACS).
